The community of Rittman, Ohio, United States, is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Sergeant Scott Ries, a dedicated law enforcement officer who was killed in the line of duty during a tragic domestic-related shooting on the night of July 5, 2026.
Sergeant Ries, a 10-year veteran of the Rittman Police Department, was among four individuals who lost their lives in the devastating incident. According to preliminary reports, officers were dispatched around 9:30 p.m. to a residence on Chippewa Trail following a 911 call reporting a break-in and gunfire. Upon arrival, responding officers encountered an active and dangerous situation, where gunfire was exchanged. Tragically, Sergeant Ries was fatally wounded during the response.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect and two additional victims also died at the scene. The injured officers were transported for medical treatment and are currently receiving care and support.
